ELEVEN

This can’t be happening. She wasn’t supposed to be falling for Clint when she should be focused on staying alive.

Tamala curled under the blankets and tugged them up to her chin, unable to sleep. She closed her eyes, thinking about his kiss and what it might mean. No matter how much she’d enjoyed it, now wasn’t the time to look deeper. Her heart hated to let those few minutes go, but survival had to come first.

She had too much at stake for her to think about him as more than her protector and a law enforcement ranger. All the teasing and taunting she’d heard in high school and college filled her memories. Smart girls didn’t marry great guys.

If she survived this...Clint would be in Yellowstone next year, and she would have to face him if she wanted to work here.

That was all cart before the horse thinking. She had to survive first before she worried about next year. If their kiss was only a onetime thing, she would hold on to that feeling as important. Probably for years to come. Guys like him weren’t everywhere.

Romantic encounters in her life had been limited to first dates and awkward social setups by friends. Guys never wanted another date after they realized she loved science and wasn’t about to put her passion for research on hold for a relationship. Though she wouldn’t have to put off her love of the wilderness with Clint; he would challenge her to do even more for the causes she loved.

Images of snow drifts, racing through the storm, flashing lights and excruciating pain wouldn’t let her sleep. Had the adrenaline pushed her to Clint? He’d been her rock all day long, faithfully sticking with her. If the Lord had sent her a guide, Clint had done the job.

Through the entire day, full of highs and lows, Clint had been calm. He’d taken care of her and himself. He’d planned and executed everything. Those abilities had drawn her to him. Not just a handsome face, but a mind and heart matched by none. Scientifically, he was perfect for her.

She punched the throw pillow softly and listened for any sound from the next room. There was a science to attraction, but what she’d done had defied reason. To become involved with the man who protected her was foolish. She had diverted his attention from his job.

Unable to sleep, she sat up and took her time unwinding the tape covering her leg. She hadn’t wanted to, but it gave her something to think about. Even when she’d been injured, he’d been prepared. He’d had bandages in his pocket. She hadn’t considered they might need first aid. Her only concern had been to get somewhere safe.

The gash was angry and pink under the bandage. She went to the bathroom and gently washed the area, put on some antiseptic from the med kit on the shelf, then took a better look. The gash the bullet left wasn’t deep and, as Clint had said, the wound was about as clean as possible.
